Why the holidays break plumbing
It isn't bad luck. Three things happen at once:
- Cooking grease. Turkey fat, gravy, bacon grease and roasting-pan drippings go down the kitchen drain while hot and liquid, then cool and solidify on the pipe wall. Repeat across one afternoon and a drain that worked fine in October stops.
- Guest load. A bathroom built for two people takes ten. Systems that cope fine normally get pushed past what they can handle, and any marginal blockage becomes an actual one.
- Garbage disposal overload. Potato peels, celery, onion skins, coffee grounds, pasta and rice are all things disposals handle badly — and all things that arrive in volume on exactly one day.
Put a coffee can or jar next to the stove. Pour grease into it, let it solidify, bin it. That one habit prevents more holiday emergency calls than everything else on this page combined.

Using a disposal properly
- Run cold water — not hot — before, during, and for 20 seconds after. Cold keeps fats solid so they get ground and flushed rather than coating the pipe.
- Feed waste in gradually rather than packing the chamber and switching on.
- Never put anything fibrous or starchy in.
- If it jams, switch it off at the wall before doing anything else.
Bathroom prep before guests arrive
- Put a plunger — a flange plunger, not a flat cup one — visibly in each bathroom. Most guest clogs are cleared by the guest if you make it possible.
- Put a bin in the bathroom so wipes and hygiene products have somewhere else to go.
- Deal with any toilet that's already flushing weakly. It will not survive the day.
Can you actually get a plumber on Thanksgiving?
Usually yes — plumbing companies run holiday on-call rotations precisely because these are busy days. But expect two things: fewer available trucks, and holiday rates, which commonly run 2× standard or more. Major holidays are among the most expensive calls of the year.
