The definition that actually matters
A plumbing emergency is any situation that is actively causing damage or making the home unsafe or uninhabitable. That's it. Not how annoying it is, not how much it's bothering you — whether it's getting worse while you decide.
Three categories qualify:

- The only toilet in the home unusable
- A leak reaching neighbouring units in a shared building
Not emergencies — and calling anyway costs you
- A dripping faucet. It will drip until 8am for a fraction of the price.
- One slow drain with nothing backing up anywhere else.
- No hot water, but no leak. Uncomfortable, not damaging.
- Low water pressure at a single fixture.
- A running toilet. Wasteful, but it's a $12 part on a weekday.
- A noisy or knocking pipe. Annoying, not urgent.
- One of several toilets clogged when you have another working.
